SMASH announces its grand opening June 10, 2008.

Toronto's largest and best source of quality salvage materials, vintage fixtures and character architectural pieces opens its doors to the public on Tuesday, June 10th. Inhabiting a massive, nearly raw, 4000-square foot showroom, this assertively cosmopolitan addition to Toronto's retail landscape incorporates an architecture and design book section as well as a contemporary art gallery.

At Smash, the emphasis is on sourcing and stocking stellar character pieces unique to the Canadian market. Inventory is displayed in juxtaposition with contemporary art works to create a playful dialogue that emphasizes the beauty of the found objects while situating the best contemporary lowbrow art alongside historic examples of stellar design and construction. A carefully chosen collection of sumptuous architectural and design publications provides customers with a wealth of eye candy to stimulate the imagination. In all, Smash promises to be a source of inspiration for residential and commercial designers, architects, and discerning home owners.

The ambitious scale of Smash reflects the diverse energies and passions of the project's partners. Jose Nieves and Jose Ortega of the bustling, live music venue Lula Lounge, bring a decade of arts programming experience to bear, while former Post + Beam co-owner Paul Mercer contributes a trained eye and sourcing acumen. Ortega's background as an international public artist and illustrator and Nieves' twenty two years in the real estate and renovation project management business strike a unique balance with Mercer's fifteen years of industry experience.

The constantly evolving inventory will reflect the tastes and particular obsessions of the partners. A visitor to Smash this spring might find a 1950s Bianchi meat slicer next to fifteen-foot high paneled doors from Argentina or stained glass windows on display beside a Lambretta scooter or vintage 1920s foosball table. Opening stock will include a variety of vintage mid-century ceramic tiles, cast iron columns and recovered wooden moldings.

Rotating, curated arts events programmed by resident art gallery Jerome Jenner, will periodically activate the Smash showroom while furthering the desire of the partners to blur the existing lines between retail store and art space.

Located in Toronto's west end Junction neighbourhood, which is prized for its magnificent, turn-of-the-century building stock, Smash adds to the area's growing reputation as a centre for quality antiques and design resources.
